This week, January 22-26, 2024, is Holocaust Remembrance week in Texas Public Schools. Texas Education Code requires public schools to provide age-appropriate instruction on the Holocaust during this week. We did that this week in the following ways:
In 1st-3rd Grade, we talked about Hitler being a man who decided that people who weren’t like him weren’t important and he decided they didn’t deserve to live. We discussed that nobody is more important than anyone else, and that we should stand up for others when they are being mistreated.
Grades 4-8 watched this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks8z7nX8oB8 and discussed how the Holocaust impacted individuals. We related it to how people who are different than us are often mistreated, and we looked at our role in that. We talked about honoring people who are different and who stand up for what they believe is right.
Our high school students discussed the Holocaust in their Social Studies classes and focused on these three ideas: 1) the Holocaust came to be because of a concept of racism propagated in Germany, 2) the event was sponsored by the government, and 3) Hitler believed that the powerful could exercise unrestrained power and any assistance to the weak stood in the way of that unrestrained power.
We encourage you to continue these conversations with your students this weekend.

Groom ISD was placed in secure mode inside the school because we saw someone down the street who we thought had a long gun. Students on campus were placed in secure areas inside the school.
Deputies have visited with the person and cleared the situation. Please know that we will always err on the side of caution for our students and staff.
The situation is all clear. Students and staff can return to campus.
Update...Due to player illness, the Junior Varsity Boys' Game at Valley has been cancelled for Friday, 01/19/2024 - The Varsity Girls at Valley will begin at 6:30 p.m. with Varsity Boys to follow. Go Tigers and Tigerettes!!
